Dead Like Me Film Reviews
5 Days To Go!
Having still not seen the new Dead Like Me Movie, I’m still really looking forward to it, and am still very excited
However… It is getting hard to avoid the reviews coming from people who have seen the film. Reviews I’ve seen are very mixed – but MOST seem to be of disappointment.
Here is a review (No spoilers) from “The Edge”, a member in our forum:
I died a little inside watching this. Everything was just so…awful Rube being gone was a disaster from the announcement, when i heard Desmond from Lost i thought ok he might not be too bad. He’s crap in it. His character is just dreadful and no need.
Daisy Adar was just an abomination, new girl didn’t fit at all and even then the characters of Roxy, Mason and Daisy in the film were just rubbish and so unbelievable compared to the Series. I know it was trying to show they had changed but this was too much.
Mobiles instead of Post its? Yuk!
The main storyline was rubbish as well, even Reggie wasn’t as loveable and none of the stuff between her and George seemed believable. Same with Joy and Delores and pretty much everything. Even the Happy Time building was changed far too much.
This seems like I’m picking fault with everything and to be honest. I think i am, watching it was just so painful, waited 5 years for it and it was just soul (pun intended) destroying.
In the past 5 years I’ve been angry about it being upset and would have accepted absolutely anything if it meaning seeing more of Dead Like Me but now i just wish it had been left alone.
I’m staying away from reviews that give away the story line (apart from what I’ve read on the official Dead Like Me site, I know nothing about the film itself)
If you’ve seen the movie, please, join the forum and post your own review! Good or Bad, but I’d really like to see something good about the film we’ve all been waiting for.

i personnaly thought the movie was great. the way they led the movie thru and to the end it leaves the entire thing open for a new series.
which is what i am hoping for. for those that have seen it, and have not. I enjoyed it, and personaly hope for more.
hopefully showtime/mgm puts it back on the air for a few more seasons. the ending has more then a few possabilities

Ok, I’ll try to be as spoiler free as possible but put something in people’s mind that might help their enjoyment of the film…
There is a basic problem with the choice of narrative they have chosen here, in that a lot of people will be going into this thinking “I love Dead Like Me, they’d better not have have ruined the things I love about it” or, more specifically, “it won’t be the same without Rube”.
People who go in looking for a reason not to like it might make up their minds too soon and miss the bigger picture. Sometimes there’s more going on than it seems…

I completely agree with DFB, and everyone knew Rube would leave one day, but how do you replace him with a guy like that? I know it’s the exact opposite but the character was so underdeveloped, every scene I had to endure was like attempting to digest bleach-soaked razorblades.
As for Jon, “the way they led the movie thru”, there was no way through. This movie was a series of predictable scenarios, awful storytelling, and a complete abomination to the television show. The only good thing I can say about the film is Georgia stayed the same badass jerk.

I am very disapointed!

The movie wasn’t awful, but it was a bit of a disappointment. Instead of replacing Laura Harris, Daisy should have just been done away with. It was also unfortunate that Mandy Patinkin (Rube) was not involved. It was just not the same without these actors and Der Waffle House.

I don’t understand why they thought they had to change it so much. The film doesn’t have the same quirky feel to it. I agree with cat – they shouldn’t have replaced Rube and daisy, and most decently shouldn’t have got rid of the der waffle haus. However saying this the film was ok, just can’t be compared to the series. I’m sure the reason why theirs been so much disappointment in the film, is because it is so different from the series and not what we are used to. I am still hoping they renew for a new season or another film though.

Sorry the word “decently” is meant to be definitely

The recast of daisy was rubbish – they should of just made a new character completely. I hate when shows just switch actor, It always ruins it, i really liked the original dasiy. They would of been better killing her off, like what they did with betty in the first season.

I agree,
It’s quite an “half deception”. Of course, the movie reproduce with success the feeling of this marvelous serie, but there are inconsistancies that cannot be forgotten.
-Roxy would NEVER jump into selfishness and break the rules of decency like that!
-I’m sorry but from what I understood from the serie, you just CAN’T reveal yourself to your living family. Georgia losses memories because she tried it and Rube ask her later “What did you lost?”
-Ok, Mason is consistent with who he is but he’s like less human than ever… He was in love with Daisy. They should have just dropped this part…
-Just get rid of Daisy. Don’t change the actress, by God’s sake! It’s awfull.
I’m wondering what Fuller would have think of this?
G.P.

I want more. I think the movie was pretty good. Now bring back Rube & put my show back on the air!

The movie was ok. I adored the series- the quirkiness, the characters, the REALNESS. The movie was just so hit and miss. It was cute, but certain aspects came perilously close to ruining it for me, the main being the recasting of “Daisy.” I would have been happier had they written her character off. Not only were her lines terrible, the acting by Sarah Wynter did not at all fit the Daisy we’ve all grown to love over the series. The movie had a surreal, superficial quality to a lot of the scenes that made it hard to get into.
However, George was wonderful and I loved the characters of Reggie and Joy. It was nice to see the changes and growth that they’ve made over the years.
I will always love me some Mason and Roxie was still a sassypants. All in all, it was worth watching. =)

I’d never seen the series before, but I started watching it two days ago and just now finished with the movie. There were parts of the series that I really really liked and parts that I didn’t much dig. But I’d definitely grown fond of it and was looking forward to the movie at the end.
But, man… it was just simply not good.
Replacing Laura Harris, like everyone has said, was just a terrible move.
The character development was almost non-existent. Roxy, Mason, and Daisy all did some very out of character things with little to no satisfactory explanation as to why. (Roxy’s little speech to George in the hallway doesn’t cut it)
And then the way they finally solved their problems with… whatever the new boss’s name was…? It just didn’t make sense.
There were lots of questions left unanswered for me after Season 2, and I was hoping many of them would be answered in the film, but nothing like that happened.
eh… very ho-hum about the whole thing now.

I really loved the series and I’m going to buy the movie DVD because I’m still hoping for a 3rd season (please, MGM, just sell the copyrights to another studio, you cancelled the series at it’s peak!)…
However, the movie just was not good, basically because it was too far from the series. Replacing Daisy was a terrible mistake and without Rube and the Waffle House it just wasn’t the same. Too many new faces, the characters acted too strange, too different from the series. I’d have loved to see all the familiar places (the original Lass house, the Waffle House, the original Happy Time office and guys etc.)
Though, the actors (George, Dolores, Mason, Roxy, Reggie, Mrs. Lass) played very well – it’s just the script who made them act strangely.
I’m still hoping for an 3rd season or another DVD. But then please bring Rube and the real Daisy back. Thank you very much. PAtrick

Like everyone said….Its not the same with out Rube and the real daisy.
If they didnt make those moves, we could had the show back on…….sadly there is no hope for dead like me…..
Dead like me, is officaly …..dead. The Majority of everyone speaking is that bring back rube, daisy, the happy time office, waffle house, everything that made the show so familar to the audience. bcuz we Luvvved all of that. Take those away ….and you got nothing. :’(
Such a dissopointment.

I was actually pleased with the movie. Sure, I would have loved it even more if the original Daisy was in it, also, if Rube hadn’t gotten his lights yet, if Der Waffle Haus hadn’t burnt down, and if the Happy Time office was the same, but I was able to follow every second of it with complete understanding. There was no randomness to it, like some people have said. I loved the series, but unlike the “hardcore” people, I can deal with a few changes. Sure, those changes were drastic, but you could live with them. Also, the ending was perfect for leading on with a new series or movie, and I will happily open my arms to Dead Like Me, no matter what it brings. People just need to deal with the changes and stop whining about them.

I like the movie, but I didn’t love it. I understand that they couldn’t get the original Daisy or Rube back, but it was a shame. I agree that Roxy’s character was a little less consistant than she had been during the TV show, but that was because the movie plot was a little weak and she had to be for the plot to work.
The actress that played Daisy was poorly placed. Other than having blond hair she looked and acted nothing like the old Daisy.
I thought Mason was the same, I liked the changes to Happy Times and George’s part was great.
I’d love to see them re-kindle the series, but I agree that if they do, they need to either get the original actors or write in new characters.
I wish we’d heard something about the series coming back. There are still a lot of plot lines out there and with the changes made in the movie (almost dropped a spoiler!) there’s a lot they could do with it. I guess it didn’t make enough money.

I gotta say that the movie was ok,just too many unanswered questions. For example, what really happen to rube, what happen and where did Betty(Rebbecca gay heart) end up,how was George able to speak to Reggie without her losing her memories(she loss some memories when she tried to talk to her mom and wasn’t able to recall those memories). Honestly I think they were trying to push for another season because they left people still guessing. But unfortunate we wouldn’t see the series(if they were to restart)until next summer or fall and they’re possible wanting to put it on the scifi network which kinda eliminates the language a little bit,but to have it back will be awesome!

the series was great but the movie was absolutely terrible with all the changes that were made it was just to much. you have to remember that the people watching the movie is just a small cult following its not a large group. and after seeing the movie and reading all of the reviews do you really think there going to waste any more time on this series. i highly doubt that its good to be optimistic but lets be honest here the movie did not go over well and thats what they were basing there decision on if they were going to continue the series or not so i think its time to let it go. a new series would be great but its just wishful thinking so enjoy the 2 seasons you do have because i dont see them continuing with a 3rd

I enjoyed the series so much (I still re-watch episodes on Hulu at times) that there was no way that I could miss out on seeing the movie, no matter what reviewers were saying. I am pretty upset to report that the film did not do the series justice at all. Not having all of the original cast and producer pretty much killed it. The script was very poorly done and I’m not even certain that it was written by anyone who worked on or even watched the original series. Roxy completely lost her original edge and sass. Mason was not the tragic but good-hearted fuckup I remember him as. Daisy… might as well have been another character altogether she was so different. The only characters who I felt remained relatively true to their original selves in the series were Reggie, Joy and George. It really bums me out because I was looking forward to seeing the emotional connection between Daisy and Mason in this film. With a completely new actress and a god awful script that mutated the characters’ personalities, it just couldn’t be done. No Rube, no Kiffany, a random new boss man in a suit… too many changes that pulled the film far far away from its original place in the series.
They do leave it open in the end for a continuation of the series, but with all the original cast already off working on other series I don’t see it happening. I will say though that if Ellen Muth were to continue the series on with a new cast I would be the first one to give it a chance.

I just watched the entire 2 seasons the last week or so, and then the movie just now. The series was amazing because it was so well written that all of the characters seemed like real people, and the acting was very, very good. There was a consistancy to the series that I have to give the writers credit for. I think Bryan Fuller was an integral part of making it so consistant, entertaining, and believable. Clearly the movie was not written by the same people, and I think the absence of Bryan Fuller really shows in the movie. it is very hard to do what he did with that series. It would draw you in, and nothing ever seemed to draw you out of it. The movie, sadly, was quite different. It was like when they re-make a great movie in that it rarely works out well. As other people have said, the Daisy character was so wonderful and complex on the series (and well acted), while the movie one was not at all up to par. Rube and the waffle haus were sorely missed as the anchors of the show. Just not as good.

Can I just say a few words, while trying not to spoil?
I’ve been a “Dead like me” fan for a few years, but never got around to watching all 2 seasons, until this day.I’ve always liked the idea, and after a few days of watching,I was hooked and thrilled when I found out there was a movie released in 2009.
But….butttt….alright,I’m completely honest here and not hating….this had nothing to do with the fact that “Rube” was missing. Not at all.Though the fact did make me sad,he was a very likable character,I leaped into this movie with a clear mind, high hopes and happiness….but was awfully disappointed.
To put it simply, after a 5 year lapse,I’d understand the actors forgetting to act in character, but this was just insulting. What they did to “Daisy” seemed like a parody and joke, especially at a certain “theater” scene (sorry if it’s spoiling). It was just offensive….it literally hurt while I watched, physically and mentally.
The other characters were also out of it,but I would’ve let it go if Rube’s replacement and the new Daisy were more believable. The plot was rushed and everything was far-fetched…I can put a hand on my heart and say Muth was the only one who did a good job, hate on her if you will, but that was George,in my eyes.
Disappointing and depressing.I guess after a 5 year lapse you can’t ask for much and I’m understanding, however….this just put me down.I just saw it,20 minutes ago,and maybe it’s too fresh in my head to be this offending, however, these are my thoughts.Sorry.They should’ve just let it go,it didn’t work for me.

This movie has nothing to do with the show: the wit, the lightness and the sharp surrealist humor is all gone, replaced by a melodramatic storyline, boring to infinite. The movie takes itself too seriously… What is missing is not Rube or Laura Harris, is the hand of the creator of the show, Bryan Fuller. I wish i hadnt seen the movie, and i cannot get why actors agreeded to take part in such a lame movie with this childish script… Obviously the writers and director dont like or understand the show. Huge dissapointment and loose of time and money.
